About the Shows
The evening performances are two hours in length and feature NU dance students from beginning through advanced levels performing a variety of dance styles, including modern, ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, and cultural dance. Since August, the advanced dancers have attended daily after-school rehearsals and monthly weekend rehearsals. The show opens with a contemporary piece taught by guest choreographer Jordan Isadore, who danced professionally with the premier international dance company Shen Wei Dance Arts. The advanced dancers also worked with New York choreographer, Alison Clancy, who dances professionally with the Met Opera. Additional numbers in this show include a student-choreographed dance by junior Eve White, who taught the “Two Step” to students from the Special Education department at Nevada Union. There is a reprisal of a tap dance to “King of New York” from the hit musical Newsies, choreographed by Sommer Wadman-Huntley; a cultural dance fusion of samba, reggae, and funk styles choreographed by Deanna Figueria; and an exciting hip hop dance choreographed by Daisy Hang, performed by the Advanced Dance Team. The intermediate dancers will perform four dances, including a piece called “Come With Me Now” inspired by the film Mad Max, where the dancers twirl long poles and drum on everyday objects like tin pails and buckets. The beginning dancers will perform a latin jazz piece choreographed by NU dance teacher, Courtney Wadman, as well as a lyrical piece choreographed by NU Assistant Director Gaby Blaney, who is also the new dance teacher at Bear River High School.
The Saturday 2:00 p.m. matinee show is shorter (one hour with no intermission) and features different pieces from the evening concerts. It includes community members and performers of all ages who attend the after-school enrichment classes offered at Nevada Union, such as the kindergarten-aged creative movement class performing “Bippity Boppity Boo” from Cinderella. This dance was choreographed by NU dance senior, Charlotte Stehmeyer, as part of her senior project. This show also includes two classical ballet pieces, choreographed by Hollie McGovern, a contemporary jazz dance featuring kids ages 11-13, choreographed by Toria Talbott, and a collaboration with Bear River High School’s dancers. Tickets for this special community matinee performance are $10, general admission seating. The box office opens at 12:00 p.m., and doors open at 1:30 p.m. Tickets for this show are not available online, but presales are available in the Don Baggett Theatre lobby on November 18-20 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. or at the box office before the show. Cash or check only for this production.
