Nevada Union High School’s Theatrical Dance Department proudly presents Spring Dance Concert: Love Songs on Thursday, May 1st through Saturday, May 3rd from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Don Baggett Theater, 11761 Ridge Road, Grass Valley, California. The show will feature innovative choreography inspired by timeless love ballads, pop hits, and romantic classics.
Over one hundred and fifty Nevada Union Dance students, from beginner to advanced levels, will be performing in this show, featuring dances in a variety of dance styles such as contemporary, ballet, jazz, tap, and hip-hop, all set to a carefully curated playlist of love songs. From classics like “You Make My Dreams (Come True)” by Daryl Hall & John Oates and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen to modern hits like “My Love” by Justin Timberlake and “Crazy In Love” by Beyoncé, each song inspires unique and captivating choreography that will leave audiences feeling the love.
For the past 15 years, Nevada Union Dance Director, Courtney Wadman, has collaborated with professional dance artists and choreographers to work with all levels of the department. The show opens with a Bridgerton-inspired ballet choreographed by Jesse Beck, who danced professionally and choreographed in New York City for over two decades. Thirty-three advanced dance students from Nevada Union worked with Mr. Beck in weekly ballet classes and rehearsals to create this period drama, set during the Regency era in England.
Students in Mrs. Wadman’s All Abilities Dance class learned a country-western line dance to “Old Love Song” by Zac Brown Band. In this class, students with moderate-severe special needs are partnered with general education students to facilitate connection and collaboration. Mrs. Wadman choreographed six original dances for this show, including a tap/contemporary dance blend to Paul Simon’s “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.”
Guest choreographer and N.U. Dance Alumna, Dr. M Annie Aguilar, created a beautiful contemporary dance about caring for ourselves and each other: the importance of self-love to share love. Senior advanced dancer, Tavia Whitestone, who started her dance training freshman year in the beginning level class, said this was her favorite piece to learn: “This piece reminded me why I fell in love with dancing. It motivates me to continue dancing with love and not stress, not competing with others, just at peace with myself and the choreography.”
